IMAP options

It looks like, after a bit of research, that there are a few big games in town when it comes to IMAP servers. The two main players are the UW IMAP server and the Cyrus IMAP server. Others include Dovecot, and Courier. There are more in addition to these, but these are the ones I've been looking at. You can find more at IMAP.ORG.

I've been reading a great summary by Mike Richardson on the different IMAP servers in the market, as well as an evaluation of the Cyrus IMAP server by Dianna Laakso.

It looks like if we move from our UW IMAP setup to the Cyrus system, we can get away from having a Unix user account for every email user, as well as using LDAP as our centralized user system. This will allow the user accounts that exist for email accounts, to be the same as those that exist on the main site, in the addressbook, etc.

At this point I'm worried about the process of migrating from UW to Cyrus since I can't find any single package that will just do it. It's not like we have a lot of users, but I'd still like to make it as easy as possible. Anyone out there have any experience with this? There is a single tool, mbox2cyrus, that I know of that will convert a users mailbox from mbox to Cyrus format. I'm not very excited about it though.

Sureal factor in suburban MA reaches level 8

I woke this morning on the floor of a friend of Jared's in Billerica. I looked outside to find a hot dark dreary rainy morning. I packed up and headed over to a McDonalds in a deserted strip mall. I got drive thru "breakfast" parked in the deserted lot and enjoyed the rain while I ate. A few minutes later a car drove into a parking space about 3 rows away and parked. A 25 year old fit looking girl got out in gym workout clothes (athletic pants, sports bra) and walked over to the parking space next to where she parked. It was really starting to rain pretty hard at this point. She took a hacky sack out of her pocket and began to play hacky sack by herself. She was pretty skilled. She did this for about 10 minutes, then put the hackey sack back in her car and pulled out three rubber balls which she proceeded to bounce juggle against the asphalt. She put these away, took out the hackey sack, continued for a few more minutes, packed up and drove off. It seems that nobody in Massachusetts cares about the rain, in that as this was happening the whole time a guy in a t-shirt and jeans was blowing the grass trimmings around on the giant unused lawn embankment next to the parking lot. By the time I left he was pretty much just shooting the water off of the wet grass up into the air.

I'm now at the colocation fortress again, and have just found that we won't get any more servers today, meaning that 58 servers are still in Boston, and we won't get them until tomorrow, leaving us with about 14 hours to rack and build 58 servers.

Concrete Skyline goes to Boston

I'm writing from inside a MCI Worldcom colocation center in Billerica, MA. It's an industrial building in a forest basically. The facility is really big. And there's a lot of servers. It's about 78 degrees and humid. Hope it cools down back home. It'll rain here tomorrow and then through the end of the week.

Flavorpill fucked up the date of the Indie BBQ. It's not today. It was yesterday. Sorry, they're usually reliable.

VFR Update

Thursday at about 2pm I got a call from Emeryville police. They'd found my bike in Oakland. It had been stripped. They said to pick it up I had to call Oakland PD because there was a "hold" on the bike. I called the Oakland impound yard and asked how do I get my bike because there's a hold on it. They transfer me to traffic because the hold is a "traffic hold". I talk to a guy in traffic who informs me that the bike was in a fatal accident (one in which somebody died). Because of this they have to keep the bike for a week or so to investigate the death. I've been trying to reach the cop who's on the case to find out the specifics, but with now luck. From this I'm assuming that the guy who stole the bike is dead since he probably wasn't able to sell it in 2 days, and if there's an accident involving a motorcycle and somebody dies, it's probably the rider. I'm also assuming that the bike is in poor shape since if there was enough energy in the collision to kill the rider, the bike probably didn't fare too well either. I'll post more when I find it out.

VFR I miss you

So I figured I'd try to let everyone know this at the same time, just to cut down on the times I have to tell the story (twist the knife). My motorcycle was stolen yesterday from in front of AskJeeves at about 4:30pm. I left the keys in it when I parked it and have obviously gotten what I deserved for doing so. At about 4:30, a Ford Expedition drove up and the passenger (young kid about 16) got out and unlocked and drove off with my bike. One of the security guards at the building thought this looked odd, so he took down the license plate of the Expedition. The car is registered out of Oceanside, CA (southern california) so it's not of much value. Anyhow, maybe it'll turn up in the next month, or maybe it's gone. I didn't have comprehensive insurance (only liability) since the bike had been almost totaled (from an insurance standpoint) about a year ago, when a guy backed his car into it while it was parked. So that's my story, and I guess the moral is don't be a fool and leave your keys in your car/bike.

Stolen VFR

Stolen Motorcycle

Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. The bike was not insured for theft and so this is my loss, not a big corporation. My name is Gene Wood and you can reach me at (415) 722-9846. Thanks very much.

Update

The bike was recovered two days later when the thief killed himself riding it. I will recover the remains tomorrow (of the bike).
