Many of you may have heard me talk about an amazing essay I read a few years ago, talking about aesthetic design theory in robotics. Anyhow, I finally found the essay that describes Masahiro Mori's theory, and for anyone interested in seeing the original instead of my poor paraphrased version, check out The Uncanny Valley : Why are monster-movie zombies so horrifying and talking animals so fascinating? by Dave Bryant.
If you haven't heard me rant about this, read the essay (it's short) and gain insight into how humans think
Wikipedia also has information on the Uncanny Valley

that’s freaky since i just read an article this morning on slate about the uncanny valley in computer/nintendo games:
http://slate.msn.com/id/2102086/
Slashdot pointed to the slate article which had a link to the old essay. No coincidence, just providence.
sort of coincidence. for me. since i read neither slashdot or slate and only went to look at it because it had a picture of alias next to it.
This is the second time I have encountered an article online, years after hearing Gene’s initial mention. The other was an essay from Harper’s concerning the bizarre attack on Dan rather in the mid-80’s.
Both have been very good and thought-provoking, but I’m also impressed by how well Gene had explained their concepts beforehand. He is the best explainer ever.
